WHAT IS YOUR TIME WORTH?

Published August 29, 2014

WHAT IS YOUR TIME WORTH?

I recently finished reading Dan Kennedy’s book No B.S. Ruthless Management:Time Management for Entrepreneurs. In the book, marketing and business legend Dan Kennedy explains how to best use your time in order to help your business (and your life as a whole) function more efficiently.

One of the main things Dan emphasizes is to know the value of your time, and to only invest your energy into projects and tasks that are worth your time. Oftentimes, staying in alignment with that advice might mean that you have to delegate tasks to other people, employees or another company. Sometimes, the people in charge of making these decisions (business owners or managers) can feel as if paying someone else to do a job they could do themselves is a waste of money.

WHAT IS YOUR PERSONAL HOURLY RATE?

One of his recommendations was to take some time to calculate what your personal “hourly rate” was. So, I took some time, sat down and calculated what my time was worth. It was an eye-opener. The final value was way higher than I ever imagined. That little exercise helped me really focus on what tasks are worth doing and what should be delegated.

JUST BECAUSE YOU CAN, DOESN’T MEAN YOU SHOULD!

Here is one key rule for time management: just because you can do it, doesn’t mean you should do it. I know it sounds like a warning your mother would give you– but it’s actually really sound time and business management advice. Although you may have to pay a little bit more to get the job done, because it frees you and your valuable time up to work on other projects, the job actually ends up costing you less in the long run.

WHAT IS YOUR PEACE OF MIND WORTH?

I often encourage businesses who are considering working with Piping Systems to look beyond the hard costs of our services, and think about the ultimate value we will be bringing to their business because, with us, they have the peace of mind knowing they won’t have to micromanage the project themselves. When you hire us, you aren’t just hiring a contracting company. We will manage every aspect of the project from start to finish. You’ll never have to babysit us or wonder if the job is going to get done on time. And on top of that, you will get top quality, first rate craftsmanship—and will never end up having to go back and troubleshoot areas which weren’t done right the first time (like you might find yourself doing with a “bargain contractor”).

Because we offer full, comprehensive service and project management to all of our clients, the business manager or owner is freed up to focus on more critical elements of their business like efficient production runs—all the while having the full confidence that the job will be done right, and done the first time. They are able to focus their valuable time on the things that are truly worthy of their attention. Thus, in the long run, more is accomplished in the same period of time.
