Associated Builders and Contractors (ABC) bestows platinum-level STEP Award on Piping Systems, Inc. in recognition of zerorecordable incidents.
(Assonet, MA) “ABC’s Safety Awards are presented to contractors achieving low on-the-job accident rates and demonstrating the highest commitment to safety,” stated Pauline L. Lally, President, Piping Systems, Inc. (PSI). “Being honored with the Platinum STEP Award is testament to the dedication of PSI in its continuing efforts to strive for a goal of zero accidents so employees may return home safely every day.”
The award was formally presented to Greg Brewer, PSI’s Safety Manager. Greg has been with Piping Systems, Inc. for 17 years. Not only does Greg lead the safety program at PSI, he also handles customer service, project management, building maintenance, and project estimating and scheduling. According to Greg, “We are challenged day in and day out. Every job comes with its own unique set of challenges.”
“Receiving a STEP Award is a team accomplishment. Our team at PSI, alongside Greg Brewer, is continuously teaching, correcting and monitoring best practices. But ultimately, the foremen and supervisors in the field deserve the credit for owning our safety culture and disseminating the 10 Life-Saving Rules throughout their crews. Our employees step up every day to meet an aggressive schedule, safely, and with the workmanship, quality, and precision second-to-none.” explained Ms. Lally.
“Every day we need everyone, on every jobsite and in every workplace, to get involved and practice good safety,” adds Jason Taylor, Vice President of Operations for PSI. “Safety is everyone’s responsibility.”

Experience Modification Rate (EMR) has a very strong impact upon a business. It is the number used by insurance companies to gauge both the past cost of injuries and the future chances of risk. The lower the EMR, the lower your worker compensation insurance premiums will be. An EMR of 1.0 is considered the industry average, and businesses strive to have an EMR lower than 1.0. We are happy to say, that as of 1/01/19, our EMR is .92.
In May, Piping Systems, Inc. was once again honored to receive the Silver Safety Training and Evaluation Process (STEP) Award in recognition of the “company’s Silver Level of achievement and its on-going efforts in the development of a quality Safety program for 2012”. The STEP award was established by Associated Builders and Contractors (ABC).
ABC is a national association with 75 chapters representing 23,000 merit shop construction and construction-related firms with nearly two million employees. ABC’s membership represents all specialties within the U.S. construction industry and is comprised primarily of firms that perform work in the industrial and commercial sectors of the industry. STEP was created in 1989 by the ABC National Environment, Health & Safety (EH&S) Committee to recognize ABC member companies with exceptional safety records. There are six levels of achievement in the STEP program: Participant, Bronze, Silver, Gold, Platinum and Diamond. Piping Systems has applied for and received a STEP award since 2003.
Related to the STEP program, we have been participants to ABC’s Self-Insured Group since 2005. This is a group of members who have gathered together to form a Self Insured Group to insure themselves for Workers Compensation coverage. All prospects must comply with rigid safety and financial standards before being accepted into the group. The prospect must also demonstrate a “top down” commitment to safety. In addition to stringent reporting requirements, participating companies must attend a monthly safety meeting with all other members of the group. We have a working Safety Committee who meets regularly to discuss PSI’s safety program and current trends. We have company-wide training as well as small group sessions throughout the year. When you hire Piping Systems, Inc. you can feel confident that our technicians are fully trained in Safe work practices minimizing the down-time at your location.
